Algeria Boosts Mining Projects, Hajj Costs Subsidized

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a Council of Ministers meeting today, focusing on key economic development projects and citizen welfare. Discussions centered around the launch of the Oued Amizour zinc and lead mine and the progress of the strategic mining railway project connecting Djebel El Hadba, Oued El Keberit, and the port of Annaba.

Following a review of the agenda and the Prime Minister’s report on government activities over the past two weeks, President Tebboune issued directives aimed at accelerating project implementation and improving the lives of Algerian citizens.

Key Directives and Decisions:

The Prime Minister was instructed to rigorously monitor the on-the-ground implementation of decisions made by the Council of Ministers and the government.

In a move to ease the financial burden on pilgrims, President Tebboune approved a subsidy of 1 million Algerian dinars for Algerian Hajj participants this year, reducing the total cost from 9.2 million to 8.2 million dinars.

Oued Amizour Zinc and Lead Mine: The President emphasized the importance of launching this promising economic project by March 2026, highlighting its potential to create jobs and generate economic benefits for the region and the country as a whole.

Mining Railway Project: President Tebboune affirmed that state investment in the mining sector is aimed at establishing new pillars and resources for the national economy, benefiting future generations. He directed the Minister of Public Works to provide monthly progress reports on the railway project, insisting on the completion of construction by the end of 2026 and its operational launch in the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, with the goal of increasing Algeria’s fertilizer production capacity.

The government was instructed to closely monitor the project daily, removing any obstacles to ensure rapid progress. The President also mandated coordination between the public works, interior, and transport sectors, along with the foreign partner, to expedite the completion of the mining pier expansion at the port of Annaba by the end of 2026. This project is considered vital to Algeria’s economic diversification strategy and its effort to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons.

Fisheries Roadmap 2026: President Tebboune stressed that developing the fisheries and aquaculture sector is a national priority, crucial for strengthening food security.
