In a striking statement, Toufik Kourichi, the sports manager of USM Alger, expressed his bewilderment over the club’s omission from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) final list for the Best African Team of 2023 award. This comes following the announcement of the final nominees for the award, which included prominent teams like Egypt’s Al Ahly, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

Speaking to “Sabq Press,” Kourichi stressed that USM Alger possesses all the qualifications needed to win the award, pointing to the team’s recent achievements such as winning the Confederation Cup against Young Africans and the Super Cup against Al Ahly. He described CAF’s decision as perplexing, especially in light of the team’s notable achievements.

It’s worth mentioning that the African Football Confederation revealed the shortlist for the best African clubs for the 2022/2023 season, which saw the absence of USM Alger. This decision remains a topic of discussion among analysts and African football fans, as USM Alger is considered one of the continent’s leading clubs.
