The United Nations has bestowed a significant honor upon Italian Opera by including it in its list of cultural heritage, acknowledging a four-century-old art form that masterfully combines drama and music.
UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, announced on Wednesday that Italian Opera had been added to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This list already features other renowned Italian elements, such as pizza.
Originating in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Florence, particularly within the Medici family’s court, Italian Opera typically incorporates complex plots, refined theatrical art, and skilled singing.
Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s Minister of Culture, praised UNESCO’s decision just hours before its formalization. Speaking to the Italian radio station RAI, he remarked, “This is a historic moment… a significant recognition of the beautiful art of opera singing in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and we should be proud of it.”

The committee is expected to review 55 new elements between last Tuesday and this Friday, falling under communal traditions, as clarified by UNESCO.
The committee will also consider adding “lyric poetry” in Italy, which “enhances collective cohesion and social and cultural memory.”
UNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage, or living heritage, as “the traditions and living expressions inherited from our ancestors,” including “oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, and festive events.”
