Algiers is set to undergo a significant transformation in its transportation infrastructure, with the announcement of several new projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, particularly in the eastern areas of the capital. These initiatives were the focus of a recent meeting of the executive council of the Algiers Province, chaired by the Governor, Mohamed Abd El Nour Rabhi.
The meeting centered around the ‘Yellow Plan,’ a comprehensive strategy that includes numerous infrastructure projects slated to begin this year. These projects are specifically designed to improve traffic flow in areas such as Bordj El Kiffan and Bordj El Bahri.
Key among these projects is the construction of a 14-kilometer coastal tourist road stretching from Oued El Harrach towards Tamenfoust. Nine kilometers of this road have already been completed. Additionally, a new 4.7-kilometer bypass road towards El Marsa and Ain Taya is planned.
The plan also encompasses the construction and expansion of roads in various districts throughout Algiers.
New Train Stations to Enhance Commuting
To further ease commuting into the city center, the ‘Yellow Plan’ includes the construction of three new train stations. Work has already commenced on a station in Rahmania, located on the line leading to the new city of Sidi Abdellah and Zeralda. Two additional stations are planned for Kouriba in El Harrach and El Hamiz in Dar El Beida.
Multi-Modal Stations and Expanded Rail Networks
According to a statement from the Algiers Province, the ‘Yellow Plan’ also features the creation of multi-modal transportation hubs, as well as the expansion and construction of electric rail lines. This includes extending metro, tramway, and cable car lines.
The Governor emphasized the need to expedite administrative procedures, announce tenders for construction companies, and conduct regular site visits to monitor progress and address any obstacles.
The ‘Blue Plan’: Coastal Development
The meeting also addressed the ‘Blue Plan,’ which focuses on coastal development from Jemila Port in Ain Benian to Tamenfoust in El Marsa. This plan aims to reclaim land from the sea to create coastal roads, tourist attractions, and recreational spaces. Several projects are currently underway, with studies being conducted for future initiatives.
The progress of projects managed by the municipalities, including road construction and rehabilitation, and drainage systems, was also reviewed.
