Algiers – The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Youssef Belmahdi, presented a detailed report to the National People’s Assembly on Monday, outlining a comprehensive strategy to solidify the national religious identity and modernize the management of the religious sector.
Addressing the Committee on Education, Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Religious Affairs, chaired by Mr. Zakaria Belkhir, Dr. Belmahdi emphasized the importance of reinforcing the national religious reference as a strategic choice for Algeria. He stated that this approach is a cornerstone for societal stability and a key element in strengthening the domestic front, particularly through the care and organization of mosques.
The Minister highlighted the ongoing implementation of the sector’s roadmap, which prioritizes the promotion of a moderate and balanced religious discourse. This, he explained, is crucial for ensuring the stability of mosques and protecting them from extremist ideologies and foreign influences. Dr. Belmahdi announced the opening of 176 new mosques in 2025, bringing the total number of mosques nationwide to 24,461. Of these, 21,766 have been digitized as of the end of 2025. He also noted that 19,985 mosques are currently active, and 13,377 religious committees have been officially accredited.
Furthermore, the Minister addressed the support provided to structures associated with mosques. He mentioned the allocation of 1,585 residential units attached to mosques across various provinces, and the fact that 2,485 mosques benefited from donations. This reflects the social and solidarity-based dimension of the religious sector and contributes to the stability of imams and religious officials.
Regarding the national network of prominent mosques, Dr. Belmahdi announced the opening of a new prominent mosque in the Tipaza province, bringing the total number of operational prominent mosques to seven. He emphasized the crucial role of these institutions in promoting scientific knowledge and disseminating religious guidance.
The Minister’s presentation underscores the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Algeria’s unique religious heritage in a rapidly changing world.
