Tunis Declaration Rejects International Tutelage Over Libya

Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, participated today in Tunis in the ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism of Neighboring Countries of Libya. He was joined by the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, and the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdel Ati.

The meeting was also attended by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh.

This consultative mechanism meeting was marked by a rich and constructive interactive discussion between the Foreign Ministers of the three countries. They reaffirmed their joint position in support of the ongoing political settlement process in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations, aimed at restoring security and stability to the brotherly country in a manner that preserves its sovereignty, independence, capabilities, and unity.

The meeting culminated in the issuance of a joint statement affirming the imperative of Libyan leadership and ownership of the political process with the participation of all vibrant forces of Libyan society. It also emphasized the importance of prioritizing dialogue and consensus in order to reach presidential and parliamentary elections in the country, as well as the unification of political, military, and economic institutions in a way that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people who aspire to live in security, stability, and prosperity.

The three countries also affirmed their readiness to communicate and consult with various active Libyan parties in order to bring their views closer together for the good and interest of the brotherly Libyan people.

In the same context, the joint statement reiterated the three countries’ rejection of all forms of external interference in Libyan internal affairs, and stressed the need to withdraw mercenaries and foreign fighters from all parts of the country. The ‘Tunis Declaration’ underscores a commitment to Libyan self-determination.

This agreement signals a unified regional front advocating for a sovereign and stable Libya, free from external influence.
