In a significant step towards bolstering Algerian-Chinese nuclear cooperation, Algeria’s Energy and Mines Minister, Mohamed Arkab, welcomed a delegation from the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), led by the company’s CEO, Yu Jianfeng. The meeting, attended by the Atomic Energy Commissioner and officials from both the ministry and the commission, underscored Algeria’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in the nuclear sector.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, the discussions focused on the current state of collaboration between the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) and CNNC. The talks highlighted the peaceful applications of nuclear energy and the potential for expanding these uses. Key topics included nuclear technology in medicine, diagnostic imaging procedures, and the production of radioactive isotopes in Algeria. These isotopes are crucial in various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and healthcare, particularly in diagnosing and treating certain cancers.

Reflecting a shared vision for the future, the two sides agreed to form a working group comprising experts from COMENA and CNNC. This group is tasked with developing a clear action plan for cooperation based on Algeria’s current use of nuclear science, technology, and applications in cancer treatment. The plan will also address the national needs in this area.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on various domains where mutual exchange of expertise and solutions for shared interests could be explored, indicating a robust, forward-looking partnership between Algeria and China in the nuclear field.
