Algiers, January 27, 2026 – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Walid, has reassured farmers of the ministry’s commitment to supporting them in modernizing their agricultural equipment. The announcement comes amid concerns about significant post-harvest losses.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Scientific Council for Food Security, held at the National Chamber of Agriculture in Mohammadia, Minister Walid highlighted the considerable losses incurred in certain crops due to issues related to mechanization. “We are seeing substantial losses in agricultural production linked to mechanization, specifically what are known as post-harvest losses,” he stated.
According to the Minister, these losses are significant across various agricultural products, ranging from 20 to 30 percent in some sectors. He emphasized the importance of addressing these inefficiencies to improve overall agricultural output.
Minister Walid reiterated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s emphasis on the crucial role of modernized mechanization in boosting agricultural productivity. He affirmed that his ministry is prepared to provide the necessary support and guidance to farmers in this endeavor. “We, as a ministry, are ready to accompany and support all farmers in modernizing their mechanization efforts, while taking into account the opinions of experts in the field,” he declared.
Furthermore, Minister Walid stressed that the sector’s new strategy is based on a principle of maximizing the return on investment. “One of the goals is to develop effective government policies, ensuring that every dinar spent yields a tangible impact on production,” he explained.
This initiative follows a working meeting chaired by President Tebboune on January 19, 2026, dedicated to agricultural mechanization. During that meeting, the President decided to establish specialized cooperatives for renting agricultural equipment to farmers, aiming to expand cultivated areas and increase the productivity of national agricultural production. President Tebboune also announced the creation of a National Council for Agricultural Mechanization.
The Ministry’s commitment underscores the government’s focus on enhancing agricultural efficiency and food security through strategic investments and support for farmers.
