General Union of Algerian Merchants and Artisans Refutes Strike Rumors

The General Union of Algerian Merchants and Artisans has refuted reports circulating on social media regarding calls for an alleged strike on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The union emphasized that these are “malicious rumors with no basis in truth” and do not represent the position of merchants or the union in any way.

According to a statement issued by the union on Monday, such “misleading campaigns aim to destabilize the market and confuse merchants and citizens.” The union added that these attempts will fail due to the awareness of merchants and their understanding of their national responsibilities, particularly as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.

The union further stressed that merchants and economic operators are conscious and responsible, and will continue to open their shops and conduct their commercial activities regularly. This commitment, the statement noted, honors the sacrifices of martyrs and embodies social cohesion and the strength of the internal front against any attempts to undermine the stability of Algeria and its people.

The same source indicated that the union takes all difficulties faced by merchants seriously. It is working within a participatory approach with the government, the Ministry of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation, and local authorities to open channels for dialogue and consultation. This aims to find practical solutions to address all challenges facing the commercial sector, thereby protecting the interests of merchants, economic operators, and the national market while strengthening the stability of the national economy.

The statement also called on transporters and taxi drivers to resume their activities. It urged all merchants, artisans, and economic operators to mobilize and open their shops on Thursday, January 8, 2026, to send a clear message that merchants remain loyal to the legacy of the nation’s martyrs.
