Western Mining Line to Transport 50 Million Tons of Iron Annually

Nabil Boubaia, Central Director at the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of Railway Investment Projects, stated that the railway network development program is based on several main pillars. He revealed that the Ministry of Public Works is overseeing the implementation of various projects within the national program to develop this network.

In a statement on Sunday, Boubaia said that the Western Mining Line, extending from Oran and Arzew to Gara Djebilet via Bechar and Tindouf with a total length of approximately 950 km, is designed to transport 50 million tons of iron ore and 25 million tons of processed materials annually.

He noted that this line will contribute to supporting economic and social development in the southern provinces, emphasizing that the project’s completion was largely achieved through national resources and coordination between several ministerial sectors, including the Ministry of National Defense and relevant local authorities.

Several projects have also been completed to modernize the line, ensure double tracks, increase capacity, and update signaling and communication networks along the northern axis, which spans 1,822 km and connects the eastern and western parts of the country.

He added that these lines constitute a genuine support base for the social and economic sectors, given their strategic importance for the national railway transport company and for local and regional development.

Boubaia expressed the authorities’ aspirations to connect the railway network in the future with neighboring Maghreb and African countries, leveraging Algeria’s strategic position as a gateway to the African continent. This includes connecting border trade and industrial zones and enhancing the mass transport of passengers and heavy cargo within reasonable timeframes.

He highlighted that the primary advantages of rail transport include reducing costs, the ability to ensure rapid delivery of supplies during emergencies, and contributing to the reduction of traffic congestion, particularly in high-traffic areas.
