Important issues on the government’s agenda

Prime Minister Saifi Gharib chaired a government meeting on Wednesday dedicated to studying several files. At the beginning of the session, and within the framework of implementing the program to develop and modernize the road network in the capital, the government examined a draft executive decree declaring the public utility of the project to construct a tunnel in the municipality of Cheraga, Algiers province.

The construction of this tunnel, located at the site known as “The Village” on National Road No. 41, where works have reached approximately 60% completion, aims to alleviate traffic congestion in this area and improve traffic flow between the regions of Cheraga, Bouchaoui, and Ain Benian.

Subsequently, the government heard a presentation on the progress of importing one million heads of sheep in anticipation of Eid al-Adha 2026. This measure, ordered by the President of the Republic, is part of the program to support citizens’ purchasing power and aims to stabilize red meat prices and ensure the availability of sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha. To this end, the agricultural sector has concluded health and commercial agreements to ensure the best conditions for the transport and distribution of sheep, particularly in coordination with veterinary and customs services to ensure compliance with health standards and traceability.

The government also heard a presentation on the National Youth Plan 2026-2029, which falls within the framework of addressing youth-related issues and supporting their aspirations, reflecting the President of the Republic’s commitments to strengthening the role of youth as a fundamental pillar in the process of comprehensive and sustainable national development. This involves an integrated and unified national framework based on coordinating policies and programs directed at youth, with an evaluation mechanism based on performance indicators to measure the achievement of objectives. This national plan aims to prepare a generation of Algerian youth who enjoy independence, creativity, and effective participation in national development.

Within the framework of following up on the implementation of major public projects, especially in the field of water security, the government was briefed on the progress of the Sidi Khalifa dam in Tizi Ouzou province, intended to provide drinking water to the northern region of Tizi Ouzou city and irrigate agricultural lands. It also reviewed the development works of the Bouzina dam in Batna province, which entered service in June 2024, ensuring the provision of drinking water to the mountainous Aurès region and the irrigation of agricultural lands, particularly orchards and fruit tree areas.
