Council of the Nation Approves Nationality Law Amendment

Members of the Council of the Nation unanimously approved the amendment to the Nationality Law on Thursday. The approval took place during a plenary session chaired by Council President Azzouz Nasri, in the presence of Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals Lotfi Boudjemaa, and Minister of Relations with Parliament Nadjiba Djilali.

Following the vote, the Minister of Justice explained that the approved text aims to “address certain behaviors targeting the stability of our country and to preserve the sanctity of the Algerian nationality bond between citizens and their state.”

He added that the importance of this text lies in its role as a solution to address actions by some Algerians who have renounced their identity and abandoned their legal and moral obligations toward their homeland. He noted that these individuals have targeted the country while exploiting their presence outside national territory and the protection provided by their countries of residence, some of which are known for their clear hostility toward Algeria, through the introduction of a new system for the deprivation of original or acquired Algerian nationality.

He pointed out that this deprivation is carried out “according to strict legal procedures and precise guarantees.” These include specifically defining cases for deprivation, notifying the concerned individual, receiving their explanations regarding the acts attributed to them, and having the files reviewed and decided upon by a specialized committee of experts from various relevant sectors and bodies. This ensures the procedure is free from any abuse and is governed exclusively by the logic of the rule of law and the protection of the state and its fundamental components.

Finally, the Minister expressed his conviction that such legislation will enable Algeria to defeat all conspiracies and thwart hostile plans.
