President Tebboune Discusses Constitutional Amendment

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed on Thursday that the 2020 constitutional amendment established a Constitutional Court for the first time in Algeria’s history, embodying a clear will to promote constitutional justice and strengthen the rule of law.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the President of the Constitutional Court, Leila Aslaoui, during the opening of the 19th session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of African Constitutional Jurisdictions, President Tebboune stated that this amendment contributed to a qualitative shift in strengthening judicial independence, consolidating the principle of separation of powers, and enhancing constitutional oversight mechanisms. He noted that these changes have strengthened the system for protecting rights, freedoms, and constitutional guarantees for citizens.

The President also highly praised the continuous efforts of the Constitutional Court in spreading constitutional culture, describing it as an essential element in building the rule of law and promoting citizenship through training, awareness, and engagement with institutions and society.

Furthermore, he emphasized that choosing Algeria as the headquarters for the Conference of African Constitutional Jurisdictions carries deep symbolism, reflecting the trust Algeria enjoys and its commitment to supporting African constitutional judicial work. He added that this choice is supported by the multifaceted assistance Algeria provides to the conference to ensure the proper functioning of its bodies.
