Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw confirmed, in his first comment following the events of the “CHAN of Shame” final, that he only tried to protect his players “from injustice.”
Thiaw posted a message on his Instagram account, stating: “We experienced an exceptional tournament with wonderful organization, but unfortunately, it ended with a dramatic conclusion. It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game (…) I only tried to protect my players from injustice.”
He added: “What some consider a violation of the rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the bias of the situation. After consultation, we decided to resume the match and win the trophy for you.”
The coach of the Teranga Lions and African champions continued: “I apologize if I hurt some people’s feelings, but football fans will understand that passion is an integral part of this sport.”
