Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in the French capital, Paris, following the death of Mauritanian migrant El Hassan Diarra during a violent detention by French police on January 14.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “The police are killing us” and held signs demanding “Justice” amid official silence and a significant media blackout from French media outlets.
Activists shared video clips showing a police officer punching the victim while he lay unconscious on the ground, without any attempt to provide first aid.
Capital police had detained El Hassan Diarra on January 14 on charges of “resisting arrest and possession of a substance resembling cannabis and forged administrative documents.”
