Yesterday evening, the Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudan, received the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Algeria, Faiza Bendris, at the ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of officials from the central administration.
According to a ministry statement, this meeting served as an opportunity to review the status and prospects of the bilateral cooperation that has existed for several years between the Ministry of Health and the UNFPA office in Algeria. The discussions aimed at strengthening and expanding this cooperation in the future, particularly regarding Algeria’s achievements in reproductive health, family planning, reducing maternal mortality, clinical care for women victims of violence, and improving the skills of health professionals to ensure the quality of health services.
In this context, the UNFPA representative recalled Algeria’s commitment, reaffirmed during the 2019 Nairobi Summit, which aims to achieve the three primary goals of the summit: zero preventable maternal deaths, zero unmet needs for family planning, and zero cases of violence against women by the year 2030.
For his part, the Minister highlighted the significant gains achieved by the national health system, notably the substantial decrease in maternal mortality and the increase in life expectancy, alongside improved health coverage and population well-being.
The Minister emphasized the importance of continuing and strengthening the strategic partnership with the UNFPA, praising its role in supporting national health programs, particularly maternal and women’s health and reproductive health. He also noted that this cooperation has significantly contributed to establishing preventive and participatory approaches, in line with national health policy priorities and Algeria’s international commitments.
For her part, the UNFPA representative in Algeria, Faiza Bendris, described Algeria as a strategic partner, affirming the Fund’s readiness to continue working, coordinating, and supporting national efforts in fields related to maternal and women’s health.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties expressed optimism about the future of cooperation between Algeria and the UNFPA, emphasizing that joint work will allow for qualitative and sustainable achievements in the field of maternal and women’s health.
