The Algiers provincial authorities announced on Tuesday the temporary closure of all forest spaces and public parks. This includes the Sablettes Promenade, the Hamma Botanical Garden, the Ben Aknoun Zoo and Leisure Park, the Kittani Promenade, the Bourouba Water Source Park, and the Eco Park in Oued Smar. The closures will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, January 28 and 29.
According to the authorities, the decision was made following a special weather bulletin issued by the National Meteorological Office on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The bulletin issued a Level 3 Red Alert, forecasting very strong winds from Tuesday night at 9:00 PM until Thursday, January 29, at noon. Wind speeds are expected to range between 60 and 90 km/h, with gusts potentially exceeding 120 km/h on Wednesday afternoon between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
Citizens are urged to adhere to safety rules and exercise caution. Recommended measures include avoiding forest areas, open public spaces, and coastal regions. Residents are also advised to secure or remove flowerpots and other objects from balconies and rooftops that could fall. Additionally, the public is cautioned against standing or passing near trees and power poles, and drivers are encouraged to reduce speed and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel, especially during sudden gusts.
