The Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) announced in a military communiqué on Wednesday evening that it had targeted rear bases belonging to Moroccan occupation forces on the outskirts of the occupied city of Smara in Western Sahara.
According to the statement, the military operation was carried out as part of an escalation of combat activities against occupation positions across various front and rear defensive belts.
Sahrawi activists circulated photographs and video footage on social media purportedly showing the aftermath of the bombardment inside the city, which is considered one of the largest urban centres in Western Sahara.
Sahrawi activist Talib Ali Salem reported hearing powerful explosions in the city earlier on Wednesday. Local sources also indicated that Moroccan occupation forces had placed the city on security alert and deployed significant reinforcements in the area.
