Algeria Marks 60 Years of Mining Sovereignty With Bold Push Toward Value-Added Industrial Economy

Algeria’s Minister of Mines and Mining Industry reaffirmed the country’s determined shift toward a domestically-driven mining sector during ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the recovery of sovereign control over national mining resources.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch at the inauguration of a new dolomite processing industrial unit in Tioulat, Ouled Hamla municipality, Oum El Bouaghi province, the minister stated that May 6 represents a historic milestone — the date Algeria reclaimed full sovereignty over its mineral wealth.

The minister highlighted the creation of an independent Ministry of Mines as reflecting strong political will to elevate the sector into a strategic pillar of the national economy, moving beyond raw material extraction toward full local transformation and integration into industrial value chains.

Key structural projects cited include Ghar Djebilet iron ore, the integrated phosphate project, and the Tala Hamza–Oued Amizour zinc and lead initiative — all described as foundations for a diversified national economy creating jobs and wealth across Algeria’s regions.
