French Minister Delegate to the Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans, Alice Rufo, arrived in Algeria today on an official visit aimed at commemorating the tragic events of May 8, 1945, when French colonial forces brutally suppressed Algerian demonstrations in Sétif, Guelma, and Kherrata, killing thousands of civilians.
Rufo told dzwatch that she will travel to Sétif to pay tribute to the victims of the massacre, acknowledging it as a painful chapter of shared history. “While the French were celebrating their liberation, demonstrations in Sétif were violently crushed over several weeks, causing thousands of casualties. This is our historical reality, and France honors itself by confronting and acknowledging it,” she stated.
On the diplomatic front, the visit reflects France’s desire to engage with Algeria transparently and with full respect for all shared memories. Rufo is expected to meet with Algerian authorities to discuss the next steps toward strengthening bilateral relations, resuming consular cooperation, and relaunching effective dialogue that serves the mutual national interests of both nations.
France’s ambassador to Algeria will accompany the minister throughout the visit and resume his duties, working to advance all aspects of the Franco-Algerian partnership.
