International relations expert Hassani Obeidi told dzwatch exclusively that there is clear political will on both sides to prevent further escalation and restore Algeria-France relations to an acceptable level — yet numerous sensitive dossiers continue to complicate the path forward.
“The return of the French ambassador, ministerial visits, and the resumption of security cooperation are strong indicators that bilateral dynamics are being revived,” Obeidi told dzwatch. “We are not speaking of mere protocol gestures, but of the gradual rebuilding of a relationship that had reached dangerous levels of tension.”
The expert noted that security cooperation between Algerian and French intelligence services has resumed — a critical pillar of this rapprochement. The file on Algerian nationals in France is also seeing greater coordination than previously observed, though it remains highly sensitive.
Obeidi emphasized that while momentum is building, Algeria retains full sovereignty over the terms of engagement, and Paris must acknowledge historical responsibilities if relations are to be placed on a truly solid and lasting foundation.
