Algerian international goalkeeper Oussama Benbot, a prominent figure for USM Alger, has underscored the critical importance of two upcoming friendly matches against the Netherlands and Bolivia. These encounters are vital preparatory steps ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, scheduled from June 11 to July 19.

“These two friendly matches against the Netherlands and Bolivia serve as crucial benchmarks, enabling us to approach the World Cup qualifiers in optimal conditions,” Benbot stated in an interview with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) media department. The national team, affectionately known as the ‘Greens,’ commenced their World Cup preparations on Monday at the National Technical Center (CTN) in Sidi Moussa, with approximately twenty players participating. The eagerly awaited list of the 26-man squad traveling to the United States is expected to be announced today during a press conference led by national coach Vladimir Petkovic at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki.
Following a brief break to celebrate Eid al-Adha with their families, the players resumed training on Thursday. This session saw the significant return of captain Riyad Mahrez, along with Houssem Aouar and Rayan Aït-Nouri. Benbot, 31, has also made a decisive comeback to the national team, concluding his previously announced international retirement after the last Africa Cup of Nations (CAN-2025).
“After the CAN, I made a somewhat hasty decision regarding my international retirement. I engaged in discussions with the President of the Federation, whom I thank for his understanding, as well as with the national coach. Today, everything is resolved,” Benbot happily confirmed. The season’s standout goalkeeper reiterated his full commitment to the Greens’ upcoming challenges, expressing a strong desire to perform robustly under the national jersey. Benbot concluded, “I intend to continue working diligently to proudly defend Algeria’s colors.”
