Trump Jokes About 2028 White House Bid Despite Constitutional Term Limit
U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fresh political debate on Friday after joking about running for the White House again during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, D.C.
Addressing journalists at the event, Trump told the audience that he was preparing another presidential campaign, describing the announcement as an exclusive “news scoop” for the reporters in attendance. He expressed confidence in his political record and suggested he would be capable of winning another election.
To reinforce the joke, Trump pulled out his signature red campaign cap and put it on before the audience. The hat featured the slogan “TRUMP 2028,” drawing laughter and widespread attention.
However, the remarks were widely interpreted as humorous rather than a formal declaration of candidacy. Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, no individual may be elected president more than twice, making another election victory constitutionally impossible under current law.
Political observers noted that Trump’s comments also echoed his long-standing claims regarding the 2020 presidential election, which he has repeatedly argued he won despite losing to Joe Biden. Those allegations have been consistently rejected by U.S. courts, election officials and independent reviews, which found no evidence of fraud sufficient to overturn the election results.
Although the U.S. Constitution can be amended, changing the presidential term-limit rule would require an exceptionally difficult constitutional process, including approval by two-thirds of both chambers of Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states.
For now, Trump’s remarks are being viewed primarily as a political joke that quickly attracted media attention.
