UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned today, Friday, of the risk of a “wider conflict” in Southern Lebanon, affecting the entire region amidst ongoing Zionist shelling of towns and villages in the area.

In a press statement today, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the Secretary-General once again calls on all parties to cease fire immediately. He referred to the “Blue Line” drawn by the United Nations between Lebanon and the Zionist entity in 2000, following the withdrawal of Zionist occupation forces from Southern Lebanon.

Guterres expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation near the Blue Line, especially with the increasingly destructive use of weapons. He stressed the need to recommit to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 in 2006, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, demanding the Zionist entity to immediately halt all offensive operations and withdraw all its forces from Southern Lebanon.

Towns and villages in Southern Lebanon are subjected to daily shelling, leading to the death of several martyrs and injuries amidst the aggression carried out by the occupation on the Gaza Strip since October 7th.

The escalation in Southern Lebanon has intensified recently, raising fears that the attacks may spread to cover the entire Lebanese map.
