British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak resigned from the leadership of the Conservative Party on Friday following his defeat in the general election. Sunak acknowledged the landslide victory of the opposition Labour Party in the legislative elections held on Thursday.

The Labour Party’s triumph ends 14 years of Conservative rule, paving the way for Labour leader Keir Starmer to take office at Downing Street.

Labour secured over 340 seats, surpassing the 326-seat threshold necessary for an outright majority in the House of Commons, allowing them to form the next UK government independently.

According to an exit poll published by British television channels, the centre-left Labour Party is projected to win 410 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons. In contrast, the Conservatives are expected to secure only 131 seats, marking their worst electoral performance since the early 20th century.

Labour leader Keir Starmer declared that the country had voted for change and that it was time for his party to fulfill its promise following his parliamentary seat victory.

“The people have spoken here and across the country tonight, and they are ready for change. Change starts here,” Starmer said.
