Tokyo – Japan has announced that it will conduct a comprehensive assessment regarding the recognition of the State of Palestine, taking into account the “progress of the Middle East peace process.”

During a press conference in Tokyo, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko stated that Japan supports the two-state solution and understands the Palestinian goal of establishing an independent state. Japan also supports Palestinian efforts to achieve this goal.

Minister Kamikawa added, “Regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state, we want to continue addressing this issue comprehensively, considering how to advance the peace process.”

This announcement follows a recent call by the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who urged Japan on Monday to recognize the Palestinian state. He stated that such recognition would represent “aligning with the right side of history and giving Palestinians hope that their independent state will soon come to fruition.”

The call was made on the sidelines of the fifth session of the Arab-Japanese Economic Forum held in Tokyo.
