Raïs Hamidou: Influential Admiral of the 19th-Century Algerian Navy

Algiers – The National Public Maritime Museum in Algiers hosted a study day on Tuesday focusing on the influential figure of “Raïs Hamidou, Admiral of the Algerian Navy,” with participation from professors and researchers specializing in his significant role in the 19th-century history of the Algerian navy.

In a speech read on her behalf by Nouar Amara, Director of Legal Protection of Cultural Property and Valorization of Heritage, Minister of Culture and Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, emphasized the importance of organizing this study day. She highlighted the rich history of the Algerian navy and its prominent figures, particularly Raïs Hamidou, who played a crucial role during the Ottoman period.

The minister noted that “Raïs Hamidou was an exceptional figure in history, one of the Algerian raïs who strengthened the Algerian naval fleet and commanded respect from other naval powers in the Mediterranean.” She stressed that remembering his achievements is not only a revival of national historical memory but also a tribute to all who have upheld the Algerian struggle.

Mouloudji also reiterated the ministry’s support for initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting maritime cultural heritage through innovative and modern methods. She mentioned that the National Maritime Museum has benefited from a study and follow-up on the restoration and development of the Khair-Eddine cellars for the museum’s benefit. On July 17, 2024, a temporary grant was awarded to a study office to commence work in the coming days. She emphasized that preserving national maritime heritage is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort from the entire society.

Amal Boukari Mekrani, Director of the National Maritime Museum, highlighted Raïs Hamidou as one of the most prominent maritime figures in the first third of the 19th century, who achieved significant fame. She mentioned the museum’s permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Algerian navy and its symbols to educate the public about Algerian maritime cultural heritage.

Researcher Ali Tablit delved into the history of Raïs Hamidou, the most famous commander of the Algerian navy, born in the Casbah of Algiers in 1773. Through his courage and skills in protecting Algerian coasts and asserting dominance in the Mediterranean, he earned the trust of Algeria’s rulers. Tablit discussed various historical sources and archives containing rare testimonies from prominent American, British, French, and other political, diplomatic, and military figures regarding Raïs Hamidou’s bravery and genius. These included testimonies from the American consul in Algiers, Tobias Lear, and the first secretary of President George Washington.

Professor Linda Belabed Wahab from the University of M’sila discussed the international context during the 19th century and Raïs Hamidou’s pivotal role in repelling Western forces’ attacks in the Mediterranean region.
