Passing of Esteemed Archaeologist and Writer Said Ahmed Karzabi

On Saturday, renowned writer and archaeologist Said Ahmed Karzabi passed away at the age of 92. Karzabi was a prominent figure in Algeria’s cultural and archaeological landscape, known for his significant contributions to the Tassili n’Ajjer region.

The National Communication, Publishing, and Advertising Corporation announced the passing of Said Ahmed Karzabi, an esteemed writer and archaeologist, on Saturday. Born in 1932, Karzabi was a respected expert in archaeology and cultural heritage, particularly known for his work in the Tassili n’Ajjer region in southern Algeria. He leaves behind a substantial scientific and cultural legacy, the result of decades of dedicated work in the field of archaeology and historical sites.

Karzabi held several key positions throughout his career, including as the former director of the Bardo National Museum and the Tassili n’Ajjer National Park. He also served as the president of the “Friends of Tassili” association, an area recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1982 due to its vast archaeological, cultural, and natural heritage.

Originally trained in cinema, Karzabi was known as a researcher in cultural heritage. He was honored by the Prime Minister in 2020 along with other artists and intellectuals. Among his many works is “Memory of Stones” (2018), published by the National Communication, Publishing, and Advertising Corporation, co-authored with a French archaeological researcher.

Those who knew Karzabi attest to his remarkable contributions to Algeria in protecting and organizing protected archaeological areas and promoting its rich cultural heritage. He produced several documentaries, leveraging his cinematic background, and organized the first conference in the Tassili region, attended by experts and researchers from around the world.
