Deglet Nour Production Surges to Record Highs in Biskra

The wilaya of Biskra, recognized as Algeria's date capital, is poised to achieve a record-breaking date production exceeding 4.1 million quintals for the 2026-2027 agricultural season. This significant output confirms the exceptional dynamism of Algerian Saharan agriculture, with the emblematic Deglet Nour variety central to this abundance, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the nation's agricultural heritage and export ambitions.

Of the total expected production in Biskra, the Deglet Nour variety alone is projected to reach 2.6 million quintals, accounting for nearly 60% of the entire volume. This overall performance represents a notable increase of approximately 100,000 quintals compared to the previous season. The harvest of early varieties has already commenced, with the peak effervescence for Deglet Nour expected from mid-October. Biskra, home to an estimated four million date palms, also diversifies its offerings with other prized varieties such as Ghars and Mch Degla.

The continuous growth in production volumes is attributed to a proactive strategy of renewal and modernization within the agricultural sector. Lahbib Bousri, director of agricultural services in Biskra, indicated that this increase is a direct result of investments made in recent years. This abundance presents a strategic opportunity for Algeria, where intensified penetration of international markets, coupled with an aggressive marketing strategy centered on the “Algérie” origin, is viewed as a viable and profitable solution to manage growing volumes, absorb stock, and generate valuable foreign currency for the national economy, leveraging the global reputation of Algerian Deglet Nour.
