Diaspora Representation Expands, Officials Discuss Citizens Abroad

Soufiane Chiab, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for the national community abroad, convened a meeting on Sunday with National People's Assembly deputies representing the Algerian diaspora. The consultation aimed to exchange views on the conditions, concerns, and needs of Algerian citizens residing outside the country, with a focus on enhancing support for this community and addressing their aspirations.

This high-level engagement occurred in the wake of the ordinary parliamentary session's opening for the tenth legislative term. A significant development in this session was the increase in parliamentary seats dedicated to the national community abroad, rising from eight to twelve. This marks the first such expansion since the establishment of diaspora representation in the National People's Assembly.

The increase in representation reflects the importance placed by Algeria's high authorities on its citizens abroad, recognizing them as active partners in shaping public policies relevant to their interests and hopes. During the meeting, Mr. Chiab affirmed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's exceptional commitment to Algerians living overseas.

Mr. Chiab emphasized the ongoing implementation of presidential directives aimed at addressing diaspora concerns through a participatory approach grounded in dialogue and coordination. This strategy seeks to ensure effective responses to their expectations and bolster their contributions to Algeria's national renewal and development initiatives. The discussions further support continuous consultation and coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diaspora's parliamentary representatives, strengthening governmental and parliamentary synergy to serve Algerian citizens abroad.
