Tebboune Orders Digitization, New Law for Cereal Self-Sufficiency
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has issued directives for the reinforced monitoring of cereal production, a key step in Algeria's ongoing efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency. These measures, stemming from a recent Council of Ministers meeting, are designed to significantly reduce imports and strengthen the nation's agricultural sector. The President underscored the importance of modernizing agricultural practices and ensuring efficient management to meet national needs.
As part of the comprehensive plan, President Tebboune instructed the relevant minister to produce monthly bulletins on the 2025-2026 harvest and threshing campaign. Walis have been tasked with precise follow-up to ascertain production rates and quantities for various cereals, including soft and hard wheat. A crucial element of this initiative is the immediate digitization of harvest payment systems at regional agencies of the Algerian Interprofessional Office of Cereals (OAIC), alongside close collaboration with the National Office of Statistics to enhance data accuracy.
Further reforms ordered by the President include a thorough revision of the role of the OAIC and specialized agricultural institutes, aiming to improve their performance and modernize their operations. President Tebboune also emphasized the necessity of combating all forms of irregularities within the agriculture, rural development, and marine fishing sectors. A new, more effective agricultural orientation law is to be prepared, incorporating mechanisms to allocate cultivated land based on annual production needs, thereby fostering greater self-sufficiency.
To support these efforts, President Tebboune directed the launch of a national soil analysis program. This initiative, to be carried out in coordination with various laboratories, will identify and classify agricultural land across different cultivated zones, providing essential data for optimized production planning. These directives collectively represent a significant step towards bolstering Algeria's food security and agricultural resilience.
