OPEC Chief Praises Algeria’s Constructive Role in Energy Dialogue
Mohamed Arkab, Algerian Minister of Energy, recently hosted Haitham Al-Ghais, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), during his working visit to Algeria. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, included the CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, the Head of the National Agency for Hydrocarbon Resources Valorization, Abdelkader Cherfaoui, the Head of the Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority, Amine Remini, and other executives from the hydrocarbon sector. Discussions focused on global oil market developments, future prospects, and key challenges facing the international oil industry.
During the talks, Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria's firm commitment to the principles of dialogue, consultation, collective responsibility, and the pursuit of consensus that underpin the work of OPEC and cooperation among participating countries within the OPEC+ framework. The two sides specifically addressed matters related to cooperation and coordination among nations involved in the Declaration of Cooperation, exploring avenues to enhance these collaborative efforts. Algeria emphasized its belief that unity, cohesion among producing countries, and coordination are fundamental elements for supporting the stability and balance of the global oil market.
The discussions also reviewed the functioning, governance, and priorities of OPEC, alongside strategies to bolster the organization's effectiveness in navigating the evolving global energy market. The meeting provided an opportunity to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the "Algiers Agreement" signed on September 28, 2016. This agreement was recognized as a pivotal moment in fostering cooperation between OPEC member states and non-member oil-producing nations, laying the groundwork for broader collaborative frameworks.
Secretary-General Al-Ghais praised Algeria's constructive role within both OPEC and OPEC+, acknowledging its continuous contributions to dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building efforts among producing countries. Both parties reiterated their shared resolve to maintain consultations and strengthen cooperation between Algeria and OPEC on various issues of mutual interest pertaining to the international oil market, underscoring the close relationship between Algeria and the organization.
