Arab League Decides to Begin Procedures to Suspend Israel’s UN Membership

Cairo – Arab foreign ministers, meeting in Cairo on Tuesday, decided to initiate steps to suspend Israel’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly. This decision was based on Israel’s failure to adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, its threat to international peace and security, and its non-compliance with the conditions for its UN membership.

As part of this initiative, the Arab ambassadors in New York have been tasked with submitting a request to the UN General Assembly President to suspend Israel’s participation. The request will also be submitted to the Credentials Committee, which forms at the beginning of each General Assembly session. Arab nations will work to gather the necessary international support for this effort, drawing on the historic advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, which called on the international community to take concrete measures to end Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

This decision by the Arab League Council reflects a stance long advocated by Algeria. The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, has repeatedly called for tightening international pressure on the Israeli occupation, particularly at international forums, including the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
