Algiers – On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Algeria’s Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Eid Rabeqa, emphasized that the commemoration of the October 17, 1961 massacres in Paris serves as a bridge of communication with the Algerian community abroad, reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting its diaspora and involving it in Algeria’s development efforts.
Speaking at a historical symposium marking the 63rd anniversary of the massacre, observed on the National Migration Day, Rabeqa highlighted that this occasion is a symbolic connection to build Algeria through the participation of its expatriates. He praised the exemplary support of the diaspora in difficult times, which demonstrates their unwavering loyalty to Algeria and their readiness to contribute to the country’s ongoing social and economic progress.
Honoring Memory and Confronting Colonial Atrocities
Rabeqa stressed the importance of collective memory, affirming that remembering events like the October 17 massacre ensures that Algeria remains committed to honoring the past. “The Seine River will forever bear witness to the brutality of French colonialism, which ruthlessly suppressed people seeking their basic right to exist,” he said.
Algeria’s Support for Palestine and International Solidarity
The minister also addressed the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people, drawing a parallel between Algeria’s colonial past and Palestine’s ongoing struggle. “Algeria will always be a safe haven and a steadfast supporter of the Palestinian people in their fight for justice and freedom,” Rabeqa affirmed.
In his remarks, the Palestinian Ambassador to Algeria, Fayez Abu Aita, paid tribute to Algeria’s history of resistance, noting that the Algerian struggle for independence was an inspiration for the Palestinian revolution. “The sacrifices and heroism of the Algerian people in their quest for freedom remain a beacon for all nations fighting oppression,” Abu Aita stated.
Symbolic Acts of Remembrance and Tribute to Heroes
To honor the 63rd anniversary of the October 17 massacre, the minister, accompanied by the Palestinian ambassador, veterans, and government officials, inaugurated a memorial at the Ministry of Mujahideen’s headquarters. The memorial, bearing the slogan “Unbreakable Oath to Martyrs and Fighters,” stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of those who sacrificed for Algeria’s independence.
Additionally, in a symbolic act to commemorate the event, the participants planted a tree at the ministry, reflecting the spirit of renewal and continuity in remembering Algeria’s heroes.
