President Tebboune: Extremist Circles in France Seek to Distort the Memory of History

Algiers – On the occasion of National Migration Day, which marks the 63rd anniversary of the October 17, 1961 demonstrations, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that the commemoration serves to honor the struggle of the Algerian diaspora, whose solidarity with the liberation movement in Algeria was crucial during the fight for independence.

In his message for the anniversary, President Tebboune warned that “extremist elements in France are attempting to distort the memory file or consign it to oblivion.”

The Role of the Diaspora in the Liberation Struggle

Tebboune highlighted that the memory of the October 17 demonstrations reflects the unity of the Algerian people and their determination to achieve the goals outlined in the historic November 1 Declaration, which launched the liberation revolution. “The anniversary recalls one of the most powerful expressions of our diaspora’s commitment to the revolutionary struggle, showing the unbreakable resolve of Algeria to free itself from the yoke of colonialism once and for all,” he stated.

Colonial Atrocities and the Legacy of Unity

President Tebboune referred to the tragic scenes in Paris, including the brutality at subway stations and on the bridges of the Seine River, which remain documented in historical archives as testimony to the colonial regime’s hatred, racism, and inhumanity. He affirmed that these moments illustrate the sacred national bond among Algerians, both at home and abroad, united by their common goal of liberation.

Commitment to Supporting the Algerian Diaspora

The President reaffirmed Algeria’s ongoing commitment to protecting and supporting its diaspora, ensuring that their interests are safeguarded and that they are included in the country’s national renewal. “The state is determined to create the best conditions for the diaspora’s integration into Algeria’s development process and the broader vision for a prosperous future,” Tebboune emphasized.

A Call for Honest Engagement with History

Tebboune underscored that the memory issue requires a new spirit of courage and integrity to overcome the burdens of the colonial past. He called for moving forward with a future-oriented approach, free from the influence of those still trapped in the outdated colonial mindset. “There is no place for the sowers of hatred and division in our shared future,” he asserted.
