Algeria Calls for Emergency UN Security Council Meeting Following Israeli Strikes on Iran

New York, October 27, 2024 – Algeria has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, scheduled for Monday evening, following recent military strikes by the Israeli regime against Iran.

The Israeli attacks, which took place early Saturday, targeted military facilities across three Iranian provinces, including the capital, Tehran. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, four soldiers were killed while attempting to repel the assault. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that the attack caused significant alarm and prompted a wave of international condemnation.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement condemning the airstrikes as a “blatant violation” of international law and the UN Charter. The Ministry described the strikes as an “unlawful act of aggression” and called on the international community to hold the Israeli regime accountable.

International Backlash and Warnings of Escalation

The Israeli airstrikes have drawn widespread condemnation from nations across the globe, amid fears of escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East.

Algeria strongly denounced the military aggression, expressing solidarity with Iran and describing the attack as a “heinous violation” of Iran’s sovereignty. Algeria’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that the strikes constitute a “serious breach of the UN Charter and the principles of international law.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the situation. According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres urged an immediate cessation of military actions, including those taking place in Gaza and Lebanon. The Secretary-General warned that continued military operations could ignite a broader regional conflict, and he renewed his call for diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.

Regional Reactions

In response to the attack, Iraq announced a complete suspension of air travel across all airports, citing “serious consequences” resulting from the “international community’s silence” toward Israeli aggression.

Tunisia also condemned the strikes, characterizing them as a “flagrant violation” of Iran’s sovereignty and a “disregard for international law and the UN Charter.”

Saudi Arabia expressed its “condemnation and disapproval” of the military actions, asserting that the airstrikes violated Iran’s sovereignty and international norms. The Kingdom reiterated its commitment to opposing any escalation in the region and warned that further conflict could threaten the stability and security of regional states and their populations.

Oman harshly criticized the strikes, calling them a “blatant infringement on Iran’s sovereignty and an egregious violation of international law.” The Omani Foreign Ministry warned that such actions would fuel the cycle of violence and undermine efforts to de-escalate tensions through peaceful and diplomatic channels.

Similarly, Kuwait condemned the airstrikes in the strongest terms, urging the international community and the UN Security Council to “fulfill their responsibilities in curbing these aggressive actions.” Kuwait’s statement highlighted the risks posed by Israeli policies of regional destabilization, noting that such acts threaten the security and future of the entire region.

The mounting international outcry underscores the urgency of Algeria’s call for an emergency Security Council meeting, as fears grow that continued military escalation could plunge the region into wider conflict.
