Algeria and Oman Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

Muscat – The official state visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the Sultanate of Oman, which lasted three days at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, culminated in the release of a joint statement emphasizing the commitment of both countries to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, in service of the mutual interests of the two nations and their peoples.

The joint statement highlighted the depth of fraternal relations between the two countries:
“In the spirit of strengthening the close brotherly ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, and in response to the kind invitation of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, accompanied by a high-level official delegation, undertook a state visit to Oman from Monday, 28 October 2024, lasting three days.”

During the visit, the two leaders held discussions marked by a spirit of brotherhood, mutual understanding, and a shared desire to further advance bilateral cooperation across a wide range of fields. The statement expressed satisfaction with the growing relationship between the two countries and celebrated the positive outcomes of the 8th Algerian-Omani Joint Committee meeting held in Algiers last June. This session also included a business forum focusing on investment and trade opportunities in both countries.

The two leaders expressed support for the outcomes of the committee’s work and directed relevant sectors to intensify their exchanges and ensure the implementation of joint initiatives and programs, which are expected to benefit both nations.

Joint Investment Fund and Economic Cooperation

One of the most notable outcomes of the visit was the agreement to establish a joint Omani-Algerian investment fund aimed at fostering partnerships in key sectors, including renewable energy, petrochemicals, desert agriculture, technology, and tourism. The leaders emphasized the importance of increasing private sector collaboration and enhancing trade and industrial exchanges to capitalize on the strategic locations of both countries for export development into regional and global markets.

In addition to the investment fund, eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering multiple sectors:

  1. Investment promotion
  2. Organization of exhibitions, events, and conferences
  3. Education and higher education
  4. Environment and sustainable development
  5. Financial services
  6. Employment, training, and media cooperation

Political Coordination and Regional Issues

On political matters, Algeria and Oman reaffirmed their alignment on key regional and international issues. They both condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran, and reiterated their unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to end the occupation and establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state solution, and Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.

The two sides stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination within regional and international organizations, aiming to promote Arab unity, security, and stability in the region. They also emphasized the need to uphold international law, justice, and fairness, while supporting peaceful initiatives that promote security and stability worldwide.

Acknowledgment of Diplomatic Efforts

The Omani side expressed its appreciation for Algeria’s efforts, as the Arab member of the UN Security Council, in defending Arab causes and promoting just solutions on the international stage. Similarly, Algeria acknowledged Oman’s key role in mediating peaceful solutions and fostering constructive dialogue among countries, both regionally and globally.

A Message of Gratitude and Future Invitations

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his deep gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, the Omani government, and the people of Oman for their warm hospitality and generosity throughout the visit. He conveyed his best wishes for Oman’s continued prosperity under the leadership of Sultan Haitham and extended an invitation for His Majesty to visit Algeria, which was warmly accepted.
