On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Mohamed Reza Oussehla, Deputy President of Algeria’s Council of the Nation (Senate) in charge of foreign affairs, welcomed Mr. Vladislav Davankov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, along with his accompanying delegation. This meeting provided an opportunity to review the trajectory of bilateral relations under the leadership of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as reflected in the strategic cooperation agreement between the two nations.
The discussions also covered “shared areas of interest,” with both sides praising the recent “dynamic progress” in Algerian-Russian relations, particularly through high-level visits that have strengthened ties. They reaffirmed the importance of deepening the historical bonds between Algeria and Russia.
During the meeting, both officials emphasized their “aligned views” on major international issues, specifically the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes. They reiterated the importance of resolving these issues in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and international law, supporting the right to self-determination for both the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples.
Mr. Davankov praised Algeria’s principled stance on liberation causes worldwide and noted Algeria’s balanced position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also condemned France’s recent position on the Sahrawi issue, Africa’s last colonial dispute, calling for an end to double standards and advocating for a return to a multipolar world order.
The statement further highlighted the need for Algeria and Russia to elevate their economic, scientific, cultural, and technical cooperation to reflect the strong political relationship they share. Both countries expressed a desire to move beyond mere trade and work toward mutually beneficial investment and partnership opportunities.
On the parliamentary level, both parties expressed their “aspiration to strengthen parliamentary relations and bring them to the level of strategic cooperation” that exists between the two nations.
