The 27th edition of the Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) concluded on Saturday, marking the end of a successful ten-day event held at the Pins Maritimes in Algiers. The fair, which ran from November 1st to 10th, showcased a wide array of cultural and literary activities, drawing millions of visitors and hosting numerous distinguished guests.
Record-Breaking Attendance and Cultural Programming
This year’s fair, which coincided with the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence on November 1, 1954, was themed “We Read to Triumph” (“Nqra’ Linanta’asar”). The event saw an unprecedented turnout, attracting 4.3 million visitors from all age groups, surpassing the previous record of 3.5 million in the 26th edition. The highest attendance occurred on Friday, when the fair registered a peak of 863,000 visitors in a single day.
In addition to the large turnout, the fair welcomed over 300 literary figures, intellectuals, and historical personalities. The cultural program was rich and diverse, featuring a series of conferences, lectures, and book launches that covered a broad spectrum of topics aligned with Algeria’s national and international priorities. Key subjects included the Algerian Revolution, the Palestinian cause, and Western Sahara, reflecting the country’s ongoing commitment to its cultural and political causes.
New Initiatives and Special Focus
This edition of the fair also introduced a new initiative with the launch of the SILA Podcast Program, titled “Open Book” (“Kitab Maftuh”). This new platform, broadcast on Facebook, was designed to highlight literary and intellectual personalities in a fresh and engaging format, offering a new way for audiences to connect with authors and thinkers. The podcast serves as an extension of the fair’s global outreach, ensuring that the event’s cultural impact continues long after its conclusion.
Furthermore, the fair dedicated special attention to Africa as the guest of honor, underscoring Algeria’s commitment to its African roots. The event featured a rich program focused on the African continent’s literary contributions and its cultural ties with Algeria.
Awards and Recognition
One of the key moments of the fair was the presentation of the First Book Award (“Jaizat Kitabi Al-Awwal”), which celebrated new voices in Algerian literature. Additionally, Qatar was awarded the title of “Best Pavilion” at the event, recognizing its outstanding representation and contribution to the book fair.
The 27th edition of the Algiers International Book Fair proved to be a significant cultural milestone, both in terms of participation and programming, further solidifying its status as one of the most important literary events in the Arab world and beyond.
