Attaf Meets UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations

On Saturday evening, November 30, 2024, in Oran, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, received the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

The meeting, which took place on the eve of the 11th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, hosted in Oran, focused on discussing areas of cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations in the fields of peacekeeping and security. During the meeting, the UN official praised Algeria’s constructive role in the Security Council since the beginning of its non-permanent membership, particularly its valuable support for the various initiatives proposed by the UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, with particular emphasis on developments in the Middle East.

In a statement to the press after the meeting, Mr. Lacroix stressed that “this seminar is extremely important,” noting that the United Nations needs now, more than ever, to work closely with African members of the Security Council and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

He also highlighted the importance of cooperation on several critical issues, such as the implementation of decisions supporting African peace operations and other situations where the UN works alongside the African Union, including in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other regions.

Regarding Middle East issues, Mr. Lacroix expressed his gratitude to Algeria for its steadfast support of the United Nations, adding that “the consistent support that Algeria has shown time and again for this process has been greatly appreciated.”
