Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed today the alignment of views between Algeria and South Africa on regional and international issues. The two nations expressed a shared preference for political and negotiated solutions to crises, steering clear of external interference.
In a joint press statement with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, following their discussions at the presidential palace, President Tebboune remarked:
“We engaged in in-depth discussions about the current regional and international landscape, particularly the Zionist aggression in Gaza and Lebanon. I take this opportunity to once again commend South Africa for its case presented to the International Court of Justice, which we fully support.”
Solidarity on Western Sahara and Regional Challenges
President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s stance on the Western Sahara issue, emphasizing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination in line with international law. The two leaders also exchanged perspectives on critical situations in the Sahel, Libya, Sudan, Central Africa, and Southern Africa.
The discussions extended to African Union-related matters, with both sides emphasizing a mutual inclination toward negotiated political solutions to crises, free from foreign interventions.
Advocacy for African Representation
Both leaders agreed on the importance of strengthening efforts at the United Nations and the African Union to advance Africa’s position on global platforms. They stressed the necessity of reforming the UN Security Council to address the historical injustice faced by Africa, in alignment with the Sirte Declaration.
Strategic Partnership and Economic Collaboration
President Tebboune highlighted the significance of President Ramaphosa’s visit as a reflection of the historic bonds and strategic nature of Algeria-South Africa relations, built on close cooperation and enduring solidarity.
This visit provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress in bilateral relations and explore effective ways to enhance them to align with the shared political will of both nations. The seventh session of the Algeria-South Africa High Joint Cooperation Commission and a concurrent business forum between the countries’ entrepreneurs further underscored this commitment.
As part of the visit, the two nations signed a Strategic Partnership Declaration and five cooperation agreements across various sectors.
A Symbolic Welcome
President Tebboune concluded by warmly welcoming his South African counterpart and his delegation, wishing them a pleasant stay in Algeria. He referenced the historic ties between Algeria and South Africa, recalling the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who once found refuge in Algeria during his struggle for liberation.
