South African President Praises Algeria’s Role at the UN Security Council

Algiers – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his state visit to Algeria, commended Algeria’s efforts and contributions as a member of the UN Security Council. He reiterated his nation’s call for reforming the council to ensure more equitable representation.

Speaking before an extraordinary session of the Algerian Parliament at the Palace of Nations, President Ramaphosa emphasized:
“South Africa renews its appeal for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative. We deeply respect Algeria’s honorable stances and stand together in striving to reform the global and financial systems to serve the interests of all nations and peoples.”

Advocating for Unity and Sustainable Development

President Ramaphosa underscored the importance of supporting marginalized and vulnerable populations worldwide. He stressed the need for African unity, cooperation, and sustainable development, highlighting the role of collaboration between Algeria and South Africa.

He praised Algeria for its historical and ongoing solidarity, noting its critical role in shaping South Africa’s liberation movement.
“Algeria was instrumental in training freedom fighters and was the first country to host the African National Congress’s international office,” said Ramaphosa, recalling Nelson Mandela’s deep connection to Algeria.

Deepening Bilateral Ties

The South African leader expressed his commitment to strengthening ties with Algeria, which he described as a nation with invaluable experience and lessons to offer. He highlighted the similarities in the historical struggles of both nations, marked by their shared fight against colonialism and oppression.

During the visit, President Ramaphosa and his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, participated in the 7th Algeria-South Africa High Joint Cooperation Commission and a business forum. These events focused on enhancing trade and investment in areas such as green hydrogen, renewable energy, aviation, and infrastructure.

Africa’s Resources for African Progress

President Ramaphosa called for African nations to harness their natural resources for their development rather than allowing them to be exploited by external forces.
“African enterprises must grow and thrive, creating new job opportunities,” he emphasized.

Shared Vision on Regional and Global Issues

Algeria and South Africa reaffirmed their steadfast support for the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes.
“We understand the weight of colonialism, which binds us to resolutely stand with the Palestinian people,” said Ramaphosa. He denounced the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza, describing it as “genocide against civilians.”

Citing Nelson Mandela, he declared:
“Our freedom will not be complete until the Palestinian people achieve full freedom and self-determination.”

Regarding Western Sahara, the South African president commended Algeria’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He called on the international community to uphold international law and the UN Charter by ensuring justice for the Sahrawi people.

A Future of Shared Aspirations

In conclusion, President Ramaphosa emphasized the unbreakable bond between Algeria and South Africa, built on their shared history and united vision for Africa’s future.
“The strong relationship between our countries will endure, driven by our collective commitment to democracy, justice, and the aspirations of a united Africa,” he said.

He invited President Tebboune to participate in the 2025 G20 Summit, highlighting the importance of Algeria’s role in shaping global and regional policies.
