National Council for Human Rights Celebrates International Human Rights Day

Algeria – The National Council for Human Rights organized a celebratory event on Tuesday in Algiers to mark International Human Rights Day under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Now.”

This celebration, coinciding with the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, brought together representatives from governmental and official bodies, along with members of the diplomatic corps.

Algeria’s Historical Commitment to Human Rights

In his speech, Abdelmadjid Zaalani, President of the National Council for Human Rights, emphasized Algeria’s unwavering commitment to human rights, a principle rooted in the November 1, 1954 Declaration. He highlighted Algeria’s achievements in maintaining a social state and upholding the right of peoples to self-determination.

Zaalani also noted the 2020 Constitution’s pivotal role in expanding freedoms, introducing robust guarantees, and institutional reforms such as establishing the Constitutional Court and enshrining citizens’ right to petition the administration.

On the international stage, Zaalani commended recent efforts by international courts to advocate for Palestinian justice and to deter aggression in Gaza, expressing hope for the realization of these initiatives.

Advancing Rights and Justice in Algeria

Justice Minister Abderrachid Tabi, represented by Rabah Bouadache, echoed the significance of the 2020 Constitution in advancing rights, restructuring authorities, and enhancing participatory democracy. He highlighted reforms safeguarding judicial independence and protecting citizens’ rights, including guarantees for fair trials, humane detention conditions, and rehabilitation programs.

The minister also underscored Algeria’s steadfast commitment to international human rights treaties, advocating for transparency and constructive engagement with global human rights mechanisms.

Global Challenges and Humanitarian Principles

Sheikh Mohamed Mamoune Kassimi El-Hassani, Dean of the Great Mosque of Algiers, stressed the centrality of human dignity in Islamic civilization, founded on justice and respect for diversity. He also addressed the current global challenges, including double standards and the rise of Islamophobia.

Recognizing Women’s Resilience

During the event, the Council presented its annual award jointly to Algerian and Palestinian women. The award honored the heroines of Algeria’s liberation struggle and highlighted the sacrifices of Palestinian women in their pursuit of national justice.
