Algerian Council of the Nation Participates in Parliamentary Leadership Workshop in Cairo

Algiers – The Algerian Council of the Nation is actively participating in the second workshop for parliamentary leadership, held in Cairo, Egypt, from December 9 to 11. The workshop is organized by the Arab Women Organization and focuses on advancing advocacy campaigns for women’s issues within parliamentary contexts, according to a statement issued by the Council on Tuesday.

Workshop Focus: Advocacy for Women’s Issues

The statement noted that Ms. Noura Sadia Jafar, a Council member, is representing Algeria at the event, under the direction of Council President Salah Goudjil. The workshop aims to enhance effective advocacy campaigns related to women’s issues in Arab parliaments. Key discussion topics include:

  • Women-related legislative reforms in Arab countries.
  • Nationality laws and their implications.
  • Advocacy strategies for women’s rights within parliamentary processes.
  • Improving the quality of gender-sensitive legislation.

Algeria’s Nationality Law Reforms

During a session focused on nationality laws, Ms. Jafar delivered a presentation on Algeria’s progressive reforms in this area. She highlighted the significant societal transformations in Algeria since independence, culminating in the 2005 amendments to the Nationality Law.

These reforms, she noted, modernized the concept of nationality as a legal and political bond between individuals and the state. Key changes included:

  • Aligning Algerian nationality laws with international treaties ratified by Algeria.
  • Promoting gender equality by enabling Algerian mothers to pass their nationality to their children.
  • Introducing flexible conditions for acquiring nationality, especially through marriage.

Ms. Jafar also addressed the issue of statelessness, particularly among children, and discussed how Algerian lawmakers have tackled such cases.

Highlighting Women in Politics

At the conclusion of the workshop, Ms. Jafar is scheduled to participate in the launch of the book Women + Politics: If They Spoke, which profiles Arab women who have made significant political contributions and have risen to prominence in their societies.
