Tipaza – On Wednesday in Tipaza, a protocol agreement was signed between Sonatrach and the General Directorate of Forestry. The agreement outlines a 10-year afforestation project aimed at planting over 423 million seedlings nationwide to establish certified natural “carbon sinks” as part of the public company’s climate strategy.
The agreement was signed by Abdelkarim Ouamar, Sonatrach’s Central Director of Health, Safety, and Environment, and Najma Rahmani, Inspector General of the General Directorate of Forestry. The ceremony was attended by Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi, Tipaza Governor Ali Moulay, and key officials from the Ministries of Energy, Agriculture, and Environment.
Project Details
The initiative seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by balancing emissions with absorption capacity through large-scale afforestation programs, thus generating carbon credits.
Key features of the project include:
- Duration: 10 years.
- Scope: Approximately 520,000 hectares of forested land across Algeria.
- Tree Planting Goals:
- 300 million trees for afforestation and reforestation.
- 120 million trees for landscape rehabilitation.
- 3 million trees for agroforestry development.
The estimated total cost of the project is 150 billion Algerian dinars.
Pilot Phase
A two-year pilot phase will be implemented to evaluate feasibility and enable stakeholders to develop expertise in carbon credit registration and generation mechanisms. This initial stage will involve planting approximately 41.3 million seedlings, covering an area of 43,000 hectares across several provinces.
Strategic Significance
This large-scale afforestation project aligns with Algeria’s efforts to combat climate change and bolster sustainable development. By creating natural carbon sinks, the initiative seeks to offset unavoidable emissions from operational activities while supporting biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.
