Algerian People’s National Army: Two Terrorists Surrender and Seven Supporters Arrested in Counterterrorism Operations

Algiers – Two terrorists surrendered to military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and seven supporters of terrorist groups were arrested during separate operations conducted by units of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) between December 4 and 10, 2024. These updates were detailed in an operational report released on Wednesday by the ANP.

The statement emphasized:
“In the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and organized crime in all its forms, ANP units executed multiple operations during this period, demonstrating high professionalism, vigilance, and readiness across the national territory.”

Key Highlights from the Report

  1. Counterterrorism Operations
    • Two terrorists, Bayawi Chafai (alias “Abu Taher”) and Foulani Ali, surrendered to military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar (6th Military Region). They handed over two Kalashnikov rifles, nine loaded ammunition magazines, and additional equipment.
    • Seven individuals suspected of supporting terrorist groups were apprehended in various locations nationwide.
  2. Combating Organized Crime
    • Coordinated efforts with security services led to the arrest of 36 drug traffickers, preventing the smuggling of 12 quintals and 31 kilograms of cannabis across the Moroccan border, alongside the seizure of 1.6 kilograms of cocaine and over 1.2 million psychotropic pills.
    • In southern regions, including Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, Djanet, and Illizi:
      • 596 individuals were arrested.
      • Authorities seized 49 vehicles, 384 generators, 337 jackhammers, and 5 metal detectors, as well as gold ore, explosives, and other tools used for illegal gold mining.
  3. Other Operations
    • 23 individuals were detained with four hunting rifles, 21,940 liters of fuel, 83 quintals of tobacco, and 21.3 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation.
    • Coastguard efforts thwarted illegal migration attempts, rescuing 480 individuals aboard makeshift boats, and detained 20 migrants of various nationalities.

These results underscore the ANP’s commitment to national security, countering terrorism, and tackling organized crime.
