Former National Football Coach Mohieddine Khalef Laid to Rest at Al-Alia Cemetery

Algiers – The funeral of Mohieddine Khalef, the former coach of Algeria’s national football team, took place on Wednesday afternoon at Al-Alia Cemetery in Algiers. Khalef passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80.

The burial ceremony was attended by Sports Minister Walid Sadi, several football club presidents, family members, athletes, friends, and a large gathering of citizens.

Tributes to a Football Legend

In a heartfelt tribute, Minister of Sports Walid Sadi praised Khalef as a “great figure in Algerian football.” Colleagues and friends remembered the late coach for his dedication, humility, and significant contributions to the sport, expressing their sorrow at the loss and offering prayers for his soul.

A Life Dedicated to Football

Khalef had a remarkable career both as a player and a coach.

  • As a Player:
    • Began his career with JS Kabylie in 1967, where he helped the team achieve promotion to the first division and secure the 1972-1973 Algerian Championship under Romanian coach Virgil Popescu.
    • Played briefly for NA Hussein Dey during the 1970-1971 season before returning to JS Kabylie until his retirement in 1974.
  • As a Coach:
    • Started coaching JS Kabylie in 1977, leading the team to its first national championship in 1977 alongside Polish coach Stefan Zywotek.
    • Appointed co-coach of the Algerian national team in 1979 with Yugoslav coach Zdravko Rajkov. Under his leadership, the team qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the Africa Cup of Nations in Nigeria.
    • Holds the record for the most titles won in Algerian football, with 13 trophies in 11 years, including:
      • 8 national championships,
      • 2 Algerian Cups,
      • CAF Cup Winners’ Cup,
      • CAF Confederation Cup with JS Kabylie.

A Lasting Legacy

Khalef’s outstanding achievements have etched his name permanently in Algerian football history. His unique accomplishments and contributions to the sport continue to inspire generations of players and fans alike.
