The Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority of Algeria has been elected Vice President of the Mediterranean Energy Regulators Association (MEDREG), a development that strengthens Algeria’s strategic role in energy regulation. This announcement was made in a statement by the authority on Thursday.

The election occurred during the 38th General Assembly of MEDREG, held on December 4 in Brussels, Belgium. The assembly renewed its governing body, electing the president and two vice presidents for a two-year term (2024–2026).

The event was attended by the President of Algeria’s Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority, Rachid Nadil, alongside representatives from member regulators, experts, and institutional stakeholders from the Mediterranean region, as well as representatives of the European Commission. Discussions focused on common challenges and collaborative solutions to promote energy transformation and regional cooperation.

In its statement, the authority emphasized that Algeria, a founding member of MEDREG, has reinforced its strategic position in energy regulation through this key leadership role. The election is seen as recognition of Algeria’s growing expertise in the energy sector across the Mediterranean.

This achievement aligns with Algeria’s ambition to take a leading role in regional discussions and initiatives related to energy transition, security, and resource sustainability. It also presents several strategic advantages, including enhanced regulatory skills and access to the experience of other Mediterranean regulators.

Additionally, this position allows Algeria to benefit from shared resources, training, study visits, and knowledge exchange with other regulators. It also offers support for projects related to energy transition, including initiatives focusing on energy networks, efficiency, and renewable resources.

As Vice President of MEDREG, Algeria is advancing its vision for a modern, efficient, and sustainable energy sector, consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The country continues to strengthen its regulatory capabilities, attract investment in the energy sector, and optimize its resource management.

MEDREG works to foster collaboration among Mediterranean countries on critical issues such as decarbonization, energy efficiency, universal energy access, and transitioning to cleaner energy systems. This shared mission lays the foundation for a more integrated and sustainable energy future in the region.

The 38th General Assembly served as a platform to enhance Mediterranean ties, promote constructive dialogue on energy policies, and reaffirm Algeria’s commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions for future challenges.

Established in 2007, MEDREG brings together energy regulators from Mediterranean countries to promote cooperation and knowledge-sharing. Its mission is to encourage better management of the energy sector and a transition toward a more sustainable and interconnected energy system. The association is jointly funded by the European Union (up to 80%) and contributions from its members.
