The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Thursday the appointment of Madjid Bougherra as the head coach of the national team for local players. His primary task will be to prepare a competitive squad for the FIFA Arab Cup 2025.

In a statement published on its official website, FAF confirmed:

“The Federal Bureau has approved the decision to appoint Madjid Bougherra as the new head coach for the national team of local players. His mission will begin on January 2, 2025, focusing on forming a competitive team comprising the best local talents in preparation for the FIFA Arab Cup 2025.”

Bougherra, a former captain of the Algerian senior national team, previously stepped down as head coach in October 2023 after achieving significant milestones. Under his leadership, the national team secured the runner-up position in the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2023) held in Algeria from January 13 to February 4. Additionally, he led Algeria to victory in the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021 in Qatar.

In CHAN 2023, Algeria lost the final to Senegal in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw (0-0, 5-4 on penalties). The tournament’s matches took place in various cities across Algeria, including Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki (Algiers), 19 May 1956 Stadium (Annaba), Miloud Hadefi Stadium (Oran), and Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium (Constantine).

Bougherra’s return is seen as a strategic move to leverage his previous success and experience in nurturing local talent. With the upcoming Arab Cup on the horizon, his leadership is expected to bring the best out of Algeria’s domestic football scene and reinforce the team’s competitiveness on the international stage.
