France Issues First Official Response to Algeria’s Recall of Its Ambassador

France’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, commented on Algeria’s decision to summon French Ambassador Stéphane Romatet, describing the allegations against France as “baseless.”

During an interview on France Inter radio, Barrot expressed regret over the situation, stating, “These accusations are unfounded, and we deeply regret this escalation. I have spoken with our ambassador and assured him of our full support.”

While addressing the issue, Barrot pivoted to discussing the partnership agreements between French President Emmanuel Macron and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the former’s previous visit to Algeria. He avoided directly responding to the allegations against France’s intelligence services.

Algeria summoned the French ambassador last week following what Algerian authorities described as “direct involvement” of French intelligence in plots aimed at destabilizing Algeria. According to El Moujahid, a state-owned Algerian daily, this diplomatic action conveyed Algeria’s firm rejection of what it deemed repeated attempts by France to undermine its sovereignty.

The Algerian government warned that these “provocative actions” would not go unanswered. It underscored its determination to defend its national stability and sovereignty against external threats.
